Director of the Kenya Meteorological Department, David Gikungu/ KENYA MET

Night-time temperatures are forecast to fall below 10°C in the Central Highlands, Nairobi, the Central Rift Valley and areas close to Mt Kilimanjaro.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned that wet and chilly conditions will continue in parts of the country, while other areas experience rising daytime heat.

In a forecast released Monday, the Met said rainfall is expected over the Central Highlands, including Nairobi, as well as the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Western and North-western Kenya.

Some of the rainfall may come with isolated storms and will vary in strength, from light showers to heavier spells.

Cool, cloudy weather is also likely to persist across the Highlands on both sides of the Rift Valley, parts of the South-eastern lowlands, and several areas within the Rift Valley.

In addition, night-time temperatures are forecast to fall below 10°C in the Central Highlands, Nairobi, the Central Rift Valley and areas close to Mt Kilimanjaro.

People living in these regions are advised to prepare for cold nights.

Meanwhile, those in North-eastern and North-western Kenya should expect daytime highs above 30°C. These areas will likely stay hot and dry during the day.

The department also issued a wind advisory, warning that southerly to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots (about 12.86 metres per second) are expected across the Coast, Kenya’s territorial waters, the South-eastern lowlands, and parts of North-eastern and North-western Kenya.

Tips to Keep Warm

During this cold period, residents are advised to take practical steps to stay warm.

These include heating indoor spaces safely and ensuring proper ventilation to prevent carbon monoxide risks.

Wearing warm clothing such as jackets, scarves, socks, gloves, and closed shoes is encouraged, especially clothes made of wool or fleece.

At night, people are advised to sleep with extra blankets or duvets to conserve heat.

Consuming hot meals and drinks, as well as staying physically active, can also help maintain body warmth.

Stay dry at all times—wet clothes or skin cool the body rapidly.
